Joseph E. Meyers (1858-1937), the son of William D. and Mary Warner Meyers, was a Conservative Orthodox Quaker, raised in Pennsdale, Pennsylvania, as a member of Muncy Monthly Meeting. He attended Westtown School and worked as a school teacher and, later, farmer in Iowa and Ohio. He was a member of Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends for much of his life. In 1808 Redstone, Salem, and Short Creek quarterly meetings, originating within the Baltimore Yearly Meeting, requested a new yearly meeting west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Ohio Yearly Meeting "set off" in 1813 included Ohio, Indiana Territory, and adjacent parts of Pennsylvania and Indiana. In 1820, the Ohio Yearly Meeting parented the Indiana Yearly Meeting. Muncy Monthly Meeting was established in 1799 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting out of Catawissa Monthly Meeting. At the time of the Hicksite Separation --which in this area of Pennsylvania did not occur until 1829/30-- the meeting divided into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.
